STEM CELLS IN STROKE PATIENTS TESTED

1 British stroke patients who received an injection of two million neural stem cells to repair brain cells that die. The first trial in the world that should help patients recover from stroke by stimulating the brain uses the mature nerve cells.

The method is considered controversial because it uses stem cells (stem cells ), which was developed in the laboratory are taken from among the candidates of the brain of human fetuses aged 12 weeks.

Stem cells are basic cells in the human body which can be transformed into various types of mature cells.

Laruence Dunn , neurosurgeon, successfully injected stem cells in patients suffering from stroke first because this method allowed embryonic stem cells.

" In this experiment , we seek security and the possibility of implantansi stem cells where it really needs a careful monitoring of patients," said Professor Keith Muir, a neurologist at the University of Glasgow , UK .

He added that most of the injected neural stem cells which automatically enters the nerve. As we know , the brain cells of patients with stroke die from lack of oxygen . The development of this therapy will be monitored for two years.

In tests on known mouse stem cells also result in repair processes in the body, for example to help the growth of blood vessels in the brain , as well as stimulate new brain stem cells to regenerate its own population .

Experiments on stem cells in mice were conducted for 10 years by researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine , USA . In this research, the experts were able to overcome the brain damage caused by stroke in mice injected with stem cells.

Within six weeks , the stem cells develop into mature nerve cells and prove the feasibility of the method in mammals.

Until next year , already 13 patients involved in this study will receive stem cell injections with increasing dose . " The dose should be increased to 20 million cells," said Muir.

All patients involved an average age of 60 and male. They have had ischemic stroke , caused by blockage of blood vessels in the brain , and are not effective in the treatment of therapy .
